Inverness College Language School offers a range of courses helping you to learn and improve your English while making the most of your time in Scotland.
From general English courses to exam preparation and progression our staff will help you meet your goals and introduce you to native and non-native English speakers.
Our classes are designed to help you develop your language skills – to speak more fluently and write more clearly, as well as giving plenty of practice in listening and reading. They also include preparation for examinations and assessments.
Part-time English language courses
ESOL Business course
The ESOL Business English course prepares candidates for Cambridge BEC Vantage (Business English Certificate Vantage). This certificate is an internationally recognised qualification that shows the level of business English to be an appropriate standard that can be used in a business context.
ESOL Advanced
The ESOL Advanced course prepares candidates for Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English). This certificate recognises the ability to be able to read quickly enough to cope with an academic course, understand complex opinions, produce clear, well structured and detailed pieces of writing, speak well with a good degree of fluency, use English flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes.
ESOL Elementary
The ESOL Elementary course prepares candidates for the Cambridge KET (Key English Test).This certificate recognises the ability to understand and use everyday expressions, basic phrases, answer basic questions about personal details and interact with English speakers who talk slowly and clearly.
ESOL Intermediate
he ESOL Intermediate course prepares candidates for the Cambridge PET (Preliminary English Test). Students who have not presented the PET in Pre-Intermediate may present in Intermediate.
This certificate recognises the ability to understand the main points of straightforward instructions or public announcements, deal with most of the situations met when travelling as a tourist in an English-speaking country, ask simple questions and take part in factual conversations in a work environment. This course also prepares students for an SQA Intermediate 1 Certificate.
ESOL Pre-Intermediate
The ESOL Pre-Intermediate course prepares candidates for the Cambridge PET (Preliminary English Test). Presenting the PET is optional. This certificate recognises the ability to understand the main points of straightforward instructions or public announcements, deal with most of the situations met when travelling as a tourist in an English-speaking country, ask simple questions and take part in factual conversations in a work environment.
This course also prepares students for an SQA Access 3 Certificate.
ESOL Proficiency
The ESOL Proficiency course prepares candidates for Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English).
This certificate recognises the ability to understand English with ease, to be able to read and to make accurate and complete notes during a presentation, to understand colloquial asides, to talk about complex and sensitive issues, to be able to speak precisely and fluently.
ESOL Upper Intermediate
The ESOL Upper Intermediate course prepares candidates for Cambridge FCE (First Certificate English).This certificate recognises the ability to understand the main ideas of complex pieces of writing, to hold a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics, to express opinions and present arguments, to produce clear, detailed writing, expressing opinions and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of different points of view.
ESOL examination centre
Our language school is an approved University of Cambridge ESOL Examination centre. Exams usually take place at the end of a course and will test your skills in four main areas: writing, speaking, listening and reading.
Following changes to visa requirements for Tier 4 student visa applications Cambridge English exams are now recognized as an approved evidence of English language.

Additional support to International students
English for Academic Purposes
All international students who are in need of additional language support are offered access to free English classes that are specifically designed to support students in their mainstream study at the college. Classes are held weekly. The course is not certificated.
